Ask God to show you His view of the world. Ask for His help to understand His view of what’s fair and what’s not.

How do we know what’s right and what’s wrong? Who makes the rules?

About justice

Each of us make decisions about what’s fair and what’s not every day. Isn’t it frustrating when something feels unfair? We might feel hard done-by and sorry for ourselves if we think that someone has been unfair to us.

God cares very much about justice. He makes it clear right through the Bible that He makes the rules about what is right and wrong. As we have judges who decide if people are innocent or guilty of crimes, God is the Judge of the whole world and will one day decide who will live with Him forever in heaven and who will not.

As the Bible is the Word of God, we can find guidance all through it as to how we should live and what we should see as unfair. Jesus came to show us the way to live, and died for us so that we could be friends with God again. We can look to Jesus for the way to act fairly to people around us.

God talks many times throughout the Bible about how unfair it is that some people are poor. He tells us that it is our responsibility to defend and take care of them.

What the Bible says

Here are a few examples of God asking us to defend the poor although there are many more:

Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.

Psalm 82:3

Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.

Proverbs 31:9

He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?’ declares the Lord.

Jeremiah 22:16

Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

Isaiah 1:17

A thought

As God’s children, with Jesus as our example, we can try to put right some of the unfair things we see in this often unfair world. How great would it be to be a superhero, jumping in to rescue people from the sticky situations they might find themselves in? Spiderman, Superman, Supergirl and Batman and Robin all fight off the baddies and rescue people.

Reading through the verses from the Bible we can see that God wants us to defend people who live in poverty. He has asked us to help them and stand up for what is right.

You are already helping to do this by sponsoring a child. The child you sponsor is able to go to school, learn about Jesus, have medicine when they’re sick and be trained in how to earn money when they leave school. Through all of these things you are helping to free them from poverty.

Here are some other suggestions of ways you can defend the poor:

  • Pray for them.
  • Look for the Fairtrade Mark on food you buy. You can find it on chocolate, bananas, Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, as well as many other foods!
  • Cut down on the electricity you use. Most climate scientists believe that we are making climates change through releasing too much carbon into the atmosphere. This is causing dangerous weather in poor countries and many poor people die each year because of these disasters.

Why not…

Design your own superhero to fight poverty!

Using the template below, think through what your superhero will wear, what her or his super power will be, what they will look like, etc.

We would love to see your finished superheroes! Will you send us a photo of your picture and tell us about how they fight poverty? You can e-mail us at info@compassionuk.org

Thank God that He is a good and fair Judge and we can trust Him. Thank Him for Jesus. Ask for help for you and your sponsored child to be superheroes, defending the poor.
