Loving Others

Pray to start

Thank God for His love for us and ask for His help to love other people as He loves them.

What do you think?

When is it easy to love others? When is it hard?

Loving others

Loving other people can be really hard. It’s easy to love people when they are kind to us, or when they’re popular and everyone else seems to love them. But what about those people that other people don’t seem to like that much? Or people who are not kind to us? That’s much harder.

What the Bible says

“If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.”

1 Corinthians 13:1-7

A thought

God showed us the most amazing love by sending His Son to die and defeat death, coming back to life, to save us from our sins. Because of Him, we can be friends with God. What great love!

These verses from the Bible go on to explain that if you have the most amazing gifts and talent and give everything you have to the poor, but don’t have love, it’s pointless. Without love, nothing else really matters. Even if you could move a mountain, it would mean nothing if you don’t have love.

Love is obviously extremely important! The verses go on to explain some of the qualities of love. It’s patient, kind, doesn’t envy or boast and it’s not proud. It doesn’t ever dishonour other people, or look for it’s own self-interest. It doesn’t get angry easily and doesn’t remember everything that’s been done that’s wrong. It doesn’t like evil but is happy about the truth! It protects, trusts, hopes and always keeps on trying.

Discuss each of these qualities. Make them into two lists, one of things that love is and one of things that love isn’t. How can you treat people more with the list of things that love is and how can you try not to do the things that love isn’t?

Why not…

Ask God for His help to love others with these qualities everywhere we go, either at home or at school.
